Chicken Of The Month - November

Chicken of The Month has been a long standing tradition here at Get Laid Beds. This month, we’ve selected  an incredible breed of chicken called an “Easter Egger”. Easter Eggers got their strange name because they’re renowned for laying blue, pink (yes, blue and pink!) and normal coloured eggs. They’re very friendly, sociable and easily tameable birds, perfect for keeping as pets or in the back garden. The benefits of having one or more of these chickens is that they’re very playful and have no trouble being around children. This makes it an excellent choice for a first chicken, or one that will be family friendly. Most chickens are friendly and easily tamed, but if you have children who aren’t keen on the idea, they may warm quickly to an Easter Egger hen with their coloured eggs.

There are many benefits to these chickens, but there’s also a couple of minor drawbacks as well. First and foremost, while they can lay their stunning multicoloured eggs, not all Easter Egger chickens lay multicoloured eggs! It’s actually quite common for it to be an even split between which Easter Egger chickens lay their colourful eggs and which lay normal coloured eggs. If you’re ever considering getting one, it’s important to remember to be prepared for the possibility that your Easter Egger hen may not lay coloured eggs.

The only other drawback that you may face is that Easter Egger hens aren’t recognised as a true breed by the APA (American Poultry Association). This isn’t technically a drawback, as it won’t really affect you if you’re just planning on having one or more Easter Egger hens as pets for the back garden. All in all, the Easter Egger hen is an excellent bird and one we’d definitely recommend to you as a suggestion for your first chicken.
