Mortise and tenon joints have been used for thousands of years by woodworkers, carpenters, and joiners alike, and to this day are still one of the strongest methods for adjoining pieces of wood at 90°.

They feature on all of our wooden bed frames as standard to ensure they can stand the test of time. In fact, this form of joint dates back to around 2500 BC and features in various pieces of ancient furniture from the Middle East, Europe and Asia that are still sturdy as ever.

What is a Mortise and Tenon Joint?

The joint itself comprises of two separate components, the mortise and the tenon, where one of each piece of wood is joined together. Although there are slight variations in the types of mortise and tenon available, they all follow the same basic principle, which is that the mortise has a square or rectangular hole which the tenon fits into.

Once in, the joint can be glued, pinned, screwed or wedged to lock it into place. The ninety-degree angle leaves little room for movement, which ensures a strong and robust design – perfect for our strong wooden beds. This is just one of the many reasons that we offer an 11-year guarantee to all our bed frames.

What are the Benefits of Mortise and Tenon Joints?

The main purpose of mortise and tenon joints is to prevent the two adjoining pieces of wood from sliding around within the joint or disconnecting. The nature of the style means that it becomes very difficult for the pieces of wood to move, thus creating a strong bond between them.

Because of our mortise and tenon joints, our wooden bed frames are strong and sturdy. This is only emphasised by the wooden slats that we use, which are twice as thick as the industry standard and cover 70% of the bed frame. Together, the mortise and tenon joints and thick wooden slats mean that our wooden beds can hold up to 474kg.
