The Importance Of Sleeping At The Right Temperature

By Oliver 29 August 2012

Many couples are aware of the importance of achieving the right temperature for a good night’s sleep.  Typically, one partner throws the duvet off the bed leaving the other shivering…or, in a big to keep warm, ‘steals’ the covers back.

So what’s the ideal temperature?

Comfort is subjective and can vary from person to person, especially when it comes to heating within the home – some people might prefer a cooler 15°c, whereas others may prefer a slightly warmer 25°c.

Naturally, our body temperature ranges from between 36.2°c and 37.8°c, this can depend on a whole variety of factors, ranging from genetics, to circulation, diet, how we feel and how active we are.  The body is also incredibly sensitive and astute to small fluctuation in the temperature around us.  The hypothalamus in the brain regulates body temperature and is effectively our in-built thermostat.  Changes in temperature whilst sleeping will stimulate the brain, making it even more important to regulate body temperature when trying to achieve the most peaceful nights sleep.

According to scientists, different rooms should have different temperatures within the home to maintain the utmost comfort.  They suggest a temperature of 24°c in a bathroom, 19°c in a living room and 16°c in a bedroom when sleeping.

Many experts in the field agree that the ease and speed one falls to sleep and the length and comfort of the sleep depend on the temperature of the room.  What usually happens is, the body decreases slightly in its core temperature to a set point and this is a signal for the induction of sleep.  But if the external temperature of the room in too high or low then the body struggles to achieve this set point and consequently you end up tossing and turning in discomfort.

So if you want the perfect night’s sleep, be sure to keep an eye on a thermostat or maybe consider buying a home thermometer to give yourself the best chance at achieving a dreamy sleep.

Tips And Strategies for creating ideal sleeping conditions:
•    Think of your bedroom as a cave, it should be cool, quiet and dark.
•    Be wary of memory-foam pillow, they maybe excellent for body shape, but can make you feel really hot.
•    Fresh air will make for a more pleasant and refreshing atmosphere in the bedroom.  The best way to achieve this is to leave a small window open during the day to refresh the room.
•    During spring/summer, one of the best way to heat your house is to open your windows and let the heat come in, however if it is too hot for you outside, then maybe try closing the windows and even the curtains.
