As a couple, you are aware of the importance of achieving the suitable temperature for a good night’s sleep. In a classic scenario, one partner launches the duvet off the bed as they’re too hot leaving the other to swelter under the left overs of the covers.

So what’s the ideal temperature?

Comfort is a personal preference, and can vary from person to person, and especially when it comes to heating within a home as some may prefer a slightly cooler temperature, whereas others may prefer it warmer.

Naturally, our body temperature ranges from 36.2 degrees and 37.8 degrees and this is dependant on a whole variety of factors. From genetics, to circulation, diet and how active we consider ourselves. Our bodies are incredibly sensitive and astute to a minute fluctuation in temperature. The Hypothalamus in the brain monitors body temperature and acts as our built in thermostat. Changes in temperature whilst sleeping stimulates the brain, making it vital to regulate body temperature when trying to achieve your perfect nights sleep.

Scientific evidence suggests, different rooms within the household should have different temperatures to maintain the utmost comfort at all times. They propose 24 degrees in the bathroom, 19 degrees in the living room, and 16 degrees in the bedroom whilst sleeping.

Experts of the field appear to agree that the ease and speed that we fall asleep as well as the length and comfort of the sleep all depend on the room temperature. Typically, the body decreases slightly in its core temperature to set a point, and this is usually the signal for the induction of sleep. However, if the external temperature of the room is too high or low then the body is fighting to achieve this set point and normally struggles, resulting in tossing and turning frequently.

So do you want the perfect night’s sleep…? Be sure to keep your eye on a thermostat or consider buying a home thermometer, that way you’re giving yourself the chance of a dreamy night’s sleep.

Tips and Strategies for ideal sleeping conditions:

  • Picture a cave, that’s how your bedroom should feel, cool, dark and quiet.

  • Fresh Air makes for a pleasant and refreshing sleeping environment. Ideally, leave a small window open during the day to refresh the room.

  • In the summer period, one of the best ways to heat your house is naturally, by opening a window and letting the hot air in. However if it’s too hot for you outside, close your windows.
