When Was The Bed Invented And Why

Establishing who invented the bed and when is actually pretty difficult. Beds have been around for in different forms for many many years which have been developed and refined over time. So in theory, no one can actually be credited with inventing the first bed.

At first, beds lacked your modern memory foam mattress, and were more just a place to rest. Usually leafs would be used as the added comfort. There was no such things as comfy bedding with luxurious pillows! There wouldn’t be any real protection from bugs on the ground.

The first record of raised beds (more like we know today) was around 3100 BCE. These were from Egypt. As these beds were raised above the ground it offered protection against rats and other pests on the ground. The bed frame height also symbolised your social status. The higher your bed was, the more important you were seen as. The most elite would decorate their bed in gold and jewels to really show their high status.

Over time, the bed sizes changed too. Typically, double wooden bed frames were the most popular, which still remains the same to this day. The king size wooden bed frame was something which has only been introduced in the recent 100 years.

This small history snippet of information shows just how much beds have came on over time. So what about a patent? Did anyone ever actually own the rights to manufacture a design?

Sarah E. Goode was granted a patent on July 14th, 1885.  She was the first person to ever receive one for beds. Even though she didn’t actually invent the bed, she was first one to receive a patent. Finding out the actual person who invent the bed is near impossible due to the huge amount of development seen in them over thousands of years.
