Once you’ve chosen your desired handmade wooden bed frame, it is equally, if not more, important to spend time choosing the ideal mattress for you, ensuring it is the correct type for your body, your requirements and your bed frame.

Remember, a comfortable bed consists of the bed frame AND the mattress working collectively, so do not consider them in isolation! And all of our mattresses can suit our wide variety of bed frames, including the Low Bed range and the Space Saver range. We also offer a bespoke service so that our mattresses can be manufactured to any specific size required for your bed.

So, which type of mattress is best? This all depends on your wants and needs. Read on to find out about the benefits of each style of mattress.

How To Pick The Right Mattress For You

Purchase the Best You Can Afford

We always advise our clients to select the best mattress they can feasibly afford. Mattresses are often neglected with customers focusing heavily on the bed frame itself, but on average a person will spent roughly a third of their daily cycle sleeping so it is an area that you don’t want to be cutting corners. If chosen wisely and maintained, a mattress should last 8-10 years, giving you countless hours of comfortable sleep and guaranteeing you wake up ready to tackle anything life throws at you.

Choosing a mattress is a matter of preference but also your well-being. If chosen diligently and looked after it will maintain its structure, comfort and continue to give support to your back, limbs and spine – fundamental for good posture and continued health.

Consider Your Body Type

Mattresses come in varying levels of firmness and tension, from soft right through to extra firm. Choosing which is right for an individual depends on personal preference, but also one’s body weight and size.

For lighter bodied people, it is generally recommended to avoid too firm a mattress as not enough of a depression into the mattress will be made to receive its full support. Conversely for heavier bodied people if too soft a mattress is bought, it could in effect be damaging to your lower back and posture by sinking too far within.

For partners of differing weights and sizes who struggle in finding a mattress suiting both individuals’ needs, we have a selection of pocket sprung or memory foam mattresses which are far better at dissipating body weight and movements during the night. In doing so, they can suit individual needs in addition to providing a comfortable and less disruptive night’s sleep for both. These two types of mattresses are described in more detail below, along with the open coil sprung mattress.

Mattress Options

Sprung Mattresses

The vast majority of mattresses use a springing system deep within the mattress. Although there may be slight differences in the type of spring system used, there are only two main sub-categories commonly used in around the world today, the ‘open coil sprung’ and the ‘pocket sprung’.

Open Coil Sprung – The ‘open coil sprung’ mattress is a slightly more economical version of the ‘pocket sprung’ mattress and it still is and has been the most commonly used springing system in the world. They are based on a simple principle whereby they feature rows of metal springs linked together with a spiral wire. This ensures the mattress retains a firm edge as well as keeping its shape over time. Designed to evenly spread body weight over the surface ,they provide a supportive night’s rest and provide a cost-effective solution for adult beds, children beds and guest beds.

Pocket Sprung– in contrast to the traditional open coil mattress, the pocket sprung mattress contains individual springs individually housed in fabric pockets preventing roll-together. In addition, they are able to mould and contour around your body shape, offering total comfort and excellent spinal support. This spring system allows each spring to work totally independent from the next, providing you with a far more luxurious alternative.

Our pocket sprung mattresses range from housing 1000 to an incredible 9000 springs, offering increasing levels of support, comfort, and luxury the higher you go. The Pocket 1000 Mattress (pictured) is our entry level pocket sprung which is an ideal choice for 2 people sharing, allowing individual springs to respond independently to each individual. Moving up the range, we have our Pocket 3000 which, through an increased spring count, offers an excellent level of precise support for your body. True luxury comes from our Pocket 7000 Mattress, featuring the largest array of springs for a superior level of support and ultimate comfort for the best night’s sleep possible.

Foam Mattresses

Although the spring system is still the most common, the foam mattress is an ever increasing market.  In general they provide is the ability to mould perfectly to an individuals body, relieving pressure points and helping towards a restful and peaceful sleep.

Memory Foam Mattresses – First designed by NASA, the advanced memory-foam used in mattresses is visco-elastic, meaning it responds and softens to body temperature and pressure allowing it to remould to ones body contours and relieve pressure points.  This ability allows the user to maintain correct posture and spinal alignment when lying on their front, back or side in addition to helping reduce backache, joint ache and circulatory dysfunction.

Our memory foam mattresses come in various varieties which include the Classic Memory and the Classic Memory Plus.  The ‘Classic’ has a 50mm layer of visco-elastic foam combined with 150mm of mixed density memory-foam ensuring overall structure and support is retained.  Whereas the ‘Plus’ comprises a thicker 100mm layer of visco-elastic memory-foam to provide an increased level of body contour support combined with 100mm of mixed-density memory-foam.

Latex Foam

First developed over 75 years ago, latex offers the user an even greater listing of qualities. Similar to memory-foam, latex-foam can conform and mould to body contours. This provides an excellent platform for maintaining the correct posture whilst sleeping, simultaneously relieving pressure points, aches and pains with a much quicker responsive feel. Its unique physical properties allow it to spring back into shape a great deal faster, acting more like a coil mattress but with a far superior level of support, comfort and luxury. It is also beneficial for people suffering from dust allergies or respiratory disorders because of its hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial properties.

Our Luxury Latex Mattress (pictured) does as the name suggests and comprises of a 100ml layer of latex complimented by 100mm of high and low density foam to provide that luxurious feel and exceptional comfort you would expect from a high quality mattress.
