So, it appears to be that time again where we choose another breed of chicken and crown it ‘chicken of the month!’

This month see’s the German Langshan chicken taking the title. This chicken is a large robust breed, and clearly from the photo has exceptional height. The standard sized German Langshan is uncommon in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however the Bantam form which is a smaller variety are pretty popular in the UK.

The Croad Langshan was first shipped to the United Kingdom in 1969, and from there, shipped to Germany. It was used in the creation of the German Langshan, along with the Minorca chicken and the Plymouth Rock; resulting in a mutant, brown – tinted fowl. The creation of the German Langshan was completed at the start of the twentieth century.

In regards to it’s appearance, this beautiful chicken is large and heavy, with its roosters weighing 4 kilograms. They have a contoured back, and a relatively small tail. With it’s long legs and upright posture, it’s profile has often been compared to a wine glass. They have a single comb and their legs are bare. They are most often found in only three colours, black, blue and white; however other colours are known but are very rare. They are strong, vital chickens that grown up very fast. They lay creamed coloured eggs which are rather large. Their weight hinders their flight, and they can be tamed without much difficulty.

So i’m sure we can all agree that they are extremely impressive, and can surely appreciate why they are a firm favourite with chicken fanciers the world over. We here at Get Laid Beds certainly favour this chicken and that is why the German Langshan chicken is our ‘chicken of the month’ for July.
