The Yokohama Chicken

So, it appears to be that time again where we choose another breed of chicken and crown it ‘chicken of the month!’

This month see’s the Yokohama Chicken taking the title. This chicken is a breed that originated from Japan. Yokohama isn’t where it originated from, however it is in fact the port where a french missionary named Girad first exported the breed to Europe where further breeding would create the Yokohama known today.

The Yokohama is primarily ornamental for many but is actually an excellent breed of chicken for many enthusiasts. It lays cream or tinted eggs. and when fed it’s lay pellet diet it will on produce around one egg per week. On the other hand, if it is fed a higher quality diet, with better portions of fish and animal protein it can produce up to an egg a day. This chicken is a relatively small breed, at it’s very largest it’s only around 4-5 pounds, and it comes in both bantam and standard sizes. It has a yellow skin and can have either a walnut or pea comb. The most distinguished feature of the Yokohama chicken, is it’s unusual plumage, unique in pattern and form from all other chickens.

So i’m sure we can all agree that they are extremely impressive, and can surely appreciate why they are a firm favourite with chicken fanciers the world over. We here at Get Laid Beds certainly favour this chicken and that is why the Yokohama chicken is our ‘chicken of the month’ for February.
