How Does The Size Of A Bed Change By Country

Throughout the world there are many different factors that will determine the size of a bed. In the UK we’re very used to a specific set of predetermined sizes, for example Small Single to Super King. There are bespoke companies that offer larger sizes, or custom made beds, Get Laid Beds being one of them. However, we know very little about beds elsewhere in the world. What sizes do they have? What different styles are there? These are quite common questions, and you may find it’s not that different from how things are here in the UK.

A good example is America. The size of a bed in America is measured in inches. They have the sizes; Small Single, Single, Single (Extra Long), Small Double, Double, Double (Extra Long), Queen, Olympic Queen, King, California King, Super King. Now most of these sound extremely similar to those that you may be familiar with if you’re reading from the UK. However, if you look at the measurements for the size of a bed marked as queen in American sizes, you’ll notice that they’re essentially identical to that of the UK’s King sized bed. It’s surprising the sort of parallels you can find.

It’s also interesting to know that according to this chart, of the standard bed sizes available America is most similar to Japan. In that aspect, the UK has a relatively limited range of standard bed sizes. However, many shops offer different sizes which would fill in the gaps seen here.

A final point to note is that America uses a derivative of the Imperial system for measurement. The official name for their system of measurements is the United States Customary Units. This is actually quite uncommon, as the majority of other countries use the metric system.
