Q: How Many Pillows Should I Sleep With?

By Jasmine 3 September 2012

The real answer to this question lies will depend on you and your bedroom habits; the position you fall asleep in, whether enjoy reading in bed or if you suffer from any neck or back pain – plus range of others.  We all have our own preferences and sleeping patterns we have become accustomed to, but making the wrong choice can lead to bad posture and potentially recurrent neck or back pain.  Let’s start by reviewing the options:

One Pillow

If you are someone who finds it hard to fall asleep on your back or side (the best positions for posture), but instead often find yourself slumped on your stomach then having more than one pillow can be extremely bad for neck and spinal alignment. It is often recommended to avoid this position, however if you have experimented with other positions resulting in little success then it is recommended that placing the pillow below your hips and resting your head on the mattress will help maintain a more natural posture.

Generally, using only one pillow is considered to be the most posture-pedic option for the user.  However, if this is your preference, we are almost sure to say that you don’t like to read in bed, as using just one pillow often proves to be very uncomfortable and unsupporting of your upper body.  Other one pillow fans typically are those who have had a history of neck or back pain and have been advised to keep their spinal column more aligned when in bed.  Lastly the memory-foam converts, whom live by their one memory pillow which moulds exactly to their contours.

Two Pillows

This is a classic choice, loved by people far and wide.  If you enjoy sitting up in bed to watch TV or enjoying some light reading before bed then you may find yourself in this category.  When opting for two pillows, it is perhaps in your interest to look into using two different types of pillows – for example try a plump hollow fibrous pillow, underneath a slightly softer pillow to maximise comfort levels.

> Two Pillows

If you are wild enough have three pillows on your bed, there is probably (I hope) a good explanation for it – you tend to sit up a lot in your bed.  Three pillows allow your posture to be adapted and manipulated into a way which offers maximum comfort and support to you head, neck and back, helping maintain a natural posture.  It’s important from a economical point of view to constantly cycle which pillows go where and which pillow you rest most of your weight on, so they can undergo equal and constant wear – increasing its life-span and saving you some extra pennies.

Let’s not forget, pillows come in all different shapes and sizes, fillings and varying firmness – each having deferring lengths of use.  Therefore this article should only be used as a guide, and not as a definitive reference.  If you would like help in choosing which wooden bed frame and mattress will support you and help maintain a healthy posture then feel free to contact us at [email protected] or 0207 183 5464.
