How To Turn A Spare Room Into A Guest Room

By Oliver 1 October 2012

When friends or family members visit your abode, it is often better to offer a spare room rather than a sofa or a guest bed.  When thinking about utilising a spare room, loft or attic or when thinking of ways to achieve a comfortable and welcoming bedroom for your guests there are several things which are often neglected and can make the difference between your friends or loved ones being able to feel at home or wanting to go home!  If done correctly, it can be achieved easily and inexpensively, so here is a simple check list we feel should ensure your guests have a memorable stay.

Furniture

Undoubtedly one of the most important things is the bed itself.  You should ideally choose a bed which is comfortable and houses under bed storage, in doing so doubles up as an extra utility storage room. If possible, twin beds offers more flexibility however if space is an issue then a small double bed or double bed should allow two people to sleep comfortably.  Our wooden bed frames with custom storage boxes provide a great option, with our low beds perfect for low or sloping ceilings such as in a loft.  Remember to leave space for a bedside table and a wardrobe which is large enough to house your guests clothing during their stay.  Providing a simple bed side lamp can prove to be a cheap but incredibly convenient option.

Materials and Décor

Neutral colours are best for guest rooms.  As I’m sure you can appreciate, choosing bold colours for walls, bedding or curtains may appeal to some, but can be too busy for other, so try keeping to neutral colours to maintain a calm frame of mind.  Warming materials such s parquet and carpet are the ideal materials to choose for flooring.

Think Like A Hotel

What items do you tend to forget when travelling?  These are the best things to add to the list of items to offer your guests.  Items such as toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpastes should be stocked, magazines, newspapers and books are optional luxury items which would be most appreciated by your guests.  Candles are great for bringing a warm and welcoming glow into the room and providing additional pillows and blankets will ensure your guests can feel at their most comfortable.

Finishing Touches.

The final few touches can really show you care, maybe a fluffy bathrobe and slippers, fresh flowers or chocolate treats will ensure your guests would love to come back at stay with you.
