Top Five Movies To Avoid Before Bed!

By Warren 9 August 2013

Simple things can prevent you from receiving a good night’s sleep and the most common cause of this can be watching ‘scary’ movies before bed. Some people love watching horror films and don’t get frightened, however, some people get so absorbed into the film they almost live the action which imprints a feeling of fear into their brain that is hard to shake off. This means it can be much harder to sleep and/or give you nightmares.

If you want to receive a great night’s sleep, we think it would be wise for you to avoid these films before heading to bed.

Woman In Black

This film has been voted one of the most scary horror films within the past ten years. In London, a lawyer grieves the death of his beloved wife Stella on the delivery of their son Joseph four years ago. His employer gives him a last chance to keep his job, and he is assigned to travel to a remote village to examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh House that belonged to the recently deceased Mrs. Drablow. The lawyer, Arthur befriends Daily on the train and the man offers a ride to him to the Gifford Arms Inn. Arthur is not welcome and is told to return to London. However, Arthur goes to the isolated manor and soon he finds that Eel Marsh House is haunted by the vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black. He also learns that the woman lost her son drowned in the marsh and she seeks revenge, taking the children of the scared locals. This scary film with jumps aplenty is sure to prevent you from looking into windows on a dark night!

Paranormal Activity

A young couple move into a new suburban starter home only to find that an irrational things begin to happen to the young woman. They become increasingly disturbed by a presence that starts off small but you can almost feel the evil – you don’t know if he is or not somehow demonic but he is most active in the middle of the night…when they are asleep. This film features elongated silences which builds up intense suspension waiting for events to happen. DO NOT WATCH IN BED. And don’t sleep with your foot out of the covers…

The Grudge

The Grudge is not the best film to watch before bed! This film is set in Tokyo, Japan and features the violent murder of a mother and her son committed by her husband which sets a curse to the house where the murders originated. Anyone who dares to enter the house becomes the next victim. Featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar and a simple, but to the point storyline, this is bound to keep you up all night. The curse even features a personification of the curse into a scary woman with thick black hair making a croaky sound – not something you want to think about, especially if your partner has long hair.

The Poltergeist (1982)

The Freeling family in California observe some scary problems with their new house. Furniture moves, objects move…and a tree attacks and tries to eat their son with their daughter disappearing into a closet. This is the work of a devious poltergeist that is as far away from Casper the Friendly Ghost as possible. The poltergeist lives in the house and doesn’t appreciate sharing the space with others. Terrifying moments are aplenty in this film whilst the Freeling family try to get their daughter back.

Psycho (1960)

In a spur of the moment decision, Marion Crane decides to leave Phoenix with the $40,000 her boss entrusted to her to deposit at the bank. She’s headed to her boyfriend Sam in Fairvale, California and the money will finally let them start their life together. After having spent a night in her car, she can’t quite make it all the way and spends a night at the Bates Motel. This is where she meets Norman Bates, a withdrawn man who seems to be dominated by his mother. They talk for a while and as a result she decides to go back to Phoenix and return the money. Marion still decides to spend the night at the motel and decides to have a shower before going to bed. A week later Marion’s sister arrives at Sam’s store in Fairvale to tell him Marion has disappeared. Together with a private detective, Milton Arbogast, they begin searching the area and eventually come across the Bates Motel. A classic film to watch before bed…not the most scary but if you’re having a shower late at night this film may prove to be scarier than first envisaged.
