Why Do I Wake Up Still Feeling Tired?

When you have a lot to do, usually the easiest thing to do is to just go to sleep. But if you are to miss out on sleep then your energy, positivity, productivity, and memory are sure to suffer. Around 20% of us are not getting enough sleep, meaning that the majority of us will wake up feeling tired.

One of the most important things to avoid before going to bed is using technology/staring at a screen. This is because it can overstimulate the brain, especially before going to bed as this can result in you finding it hard to get to sleep. It’s advised that you avoid viewing any of these devices within an hour of going to bed, although this is easier said than done.

Having a relatively cool bedroom is crucial for those trying to get to sleep in order to ensure that you don’t wake up feeling tired. The ideal temperature is to a cool point so that you could easily get to sleep with a light blanket. Anything cooler or warmer than this may cause you to wake up in the night, waking up in the night can lead to sleep deprivation, especially as you may then struggle to get back to sleep.

Another important factor is to hide your clock as this can be a big distraction when you are trying to get to sleep. This is because you become a lot more aware that you can’t get to sleep as your brain is a lot more active. Therefore you would be better to face your alarm away from you or to put your alarm clock on the floor.

It’s important to avoid consuming alcohol before going to bed, this is because alcohol is a depressant to the nervous system. So although it may help you get to sleep more easily, the effects soon wear off and can cause you to wake up in the middle of the night.

Overall, it’s important to create an ideal sleeping environment if you want to avoid waking up still feeling tired. You should stop watching TV and using your mobile phone / laptop / tablet, late at night as this can overstimulate the brain to the point that you’ll find it difficult to get to sleep.
