What is a Tog Rating?

When ordering a new duvet you will notice that it has been given a Tog Rating, but people often don’t understand what it actually means. So we here at Get Laid Beds are going to explain what the Tog Rating actually means.

The Tog Rating refers to the thickness/warmth that your duvet will provide. It tends to range between 3.0-13.5, the higher the tog rating, the thicker the duvet. Likewise the smaller the tog rating, the thinner the duvet. The Tog, is generally a measurement of thermal resistance, also commonly known as thermal insulation, it’s commonly used in the textiles industry and is often seen quoted on product descriptions, for example, duvets and carpet underlay. British duvets are sold in different steps of 1.5 tog from 4.5 tog (summer) to

15 tog (extra warm)

  • Lightweight summer duvet – 3.0 – 4.5 tog

  • Spring/Autumn weight duvet – 7.5 – 10.5 tog

  • Winter weight duvet – 12.0 – 13.5 tog

The best duvet that we have for the summer has got to be the 4.5 Tog Soft Hollowfibre Duvet. Due to it’s thin yet comfortable duvet, it makes this duvet the ideal solution for those looking to keep cool during the summer whilst still having the additional comfort that a duvet applies.

Many people tend to go with an All Season Hollowfibre Duvet, this is because it provides the perfect level between warmth and coolness. Making it ideal for the warm summer months as well as the cold winter months.

Ideally for the winter you’ll be wanting the 13.5 Tog Hungarian Goose Down Duvet, this is the thickest duvet that we sell, the Hungarian goose feathers make it a perfect addition to your bed due to their high level of comfort.

Overall, the tog rating is a measurement of the thickness and therefore the warmth that a duvet provides. The higher the tog rating, the thicker the duvet, so ideally you’ll want a duvet with a high tog rating during the winter. Meaning that in the summer you’ll be wanting a duvet with a low tog rating.
