Cowering behind cushions, breaking the bones in your partner’s hand and jumping out of your skin all of the effects of a scary movie, but secretly we love them. The adrenaline we get from being scared leads to us wanting to watch more and more scary movies for some puzzling reason. And if you’re not a horror movie fan yourself, you may also be puzzled as to why people put themselves through this ordeal, why watch it in the first place?

Many scary movies have trilogy’s etc. such as Saw which hook you into continuously watching them, you have no idea why, your cushions are ruined, your partner has no bones left in their hand and you have no skin left to jump out of, but we love them so we’re so obsessed with them we put ourselves through it. The exhilaration and enthralment we get from watching scary movies, somehow triggers a stimulant that leads us to watch them again and again even though we had a sleepless night, hard to believe I know.

The more the film affects us, the more fear we experience the more we actually claim to enjoy the movie. According to Greek Philosopher Aristotle, people are attracted to scary moments, which include movie scenes because it gives them a chance to release their pent up aggression. As humans we were born with a super active brain, which means we are curious a lot. We loved to be shocked and what drives this is the morbid curiosity we have. Also people tend to love horror movies when the gore and violence is directed against those they believe are deserving of such treatment.
