World Cup 2014: Brazil

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is the 20th World Cup – the largest international men’s football tournament. This year, this is currently taking place in Brazil and it was the incredible opening ceremony yesterday, the 12th June. This is the second time that Brazil has hosted the competition – the last one being held in 1950. A total of 64 matches will be played across 12 cities in Brazil in new or redeveloped stadiums.

The World Cup Opening Ceremony opened with music and passion being a strong theme without. It was held from the Arena de Sao Paulo ahead of last night’s match between hosts Brazil and Croatia. The colourful opening ceremony had a cast of 660 dancers which paid tribute to Brazil’s nature, people and football with a show around a ‘living’ ball which flashed welcome messages in the 23 languages of the 32 qualifying countries. The performers were from dance schools and academies in the city and they are dressed as symbols of Brazi’s stunning natural landscape such as raindrops, rainforest trees and colourful flowers. The final act of the evening saw a performance of the official World Cup song ‘We Are One’ sang by Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Brazilian star Claudia Leitte.

We know here at Get Laid Beds we’ll be getting into the full swing of the World Cup spirit and as always, supporting the English heritage! England will be shown on Saturday 14th June (that’s tomorrow!) when they will play against fellow Group D team Italy at 6pm. Of course we want England to win…however, does anyone else have a 2nd favourite as a ‘back up’ team? We’d love to hear from you!
