By George! It’s A Royal Baby Boy!

By Emily 26 July 2013

The Royal baby has finally arrived after months of speculation regarding the gender and the name of the future royal. Earlier this week, Kate Middleton gave birth to a healthy baby boy and has named him mere days after his arrival unlike other royal infants in the earlier years of the monarchy. Crowds have been drawn to the modern royals and bets were placed at bookmakers throughout the country for the future name of the latest royal arrival.

The Duke and Duchess had been expected to pick a traditional royal name for their son and the bookmakers’ list featured a variety of these. On the 24th July, Kate Middleton and Prince William officially named their son George Alexander Louis. The birth means that three generations of direct heirs to the throne are alive at the same time, a situation which hasn’t occurred in over 110 years.

So what’s in the name ‘George Alexander Louis’?

George is a familiar name amongst British kings, having featured throughout modern history and the most recent royal George was the Queen’s father. Royal infants usually have historical names which are passed down through the generations. George is especially popular throughout the country due to the association with St George, the patron saint of England.

Alexander is most likely derived from the Queen’s own middle name, which is Alexandra (the most popular choice of name had the royal baby been a girl). This name also makes you think of Alexander the Great, a popular name through history lessons and textbooks.

Lastly, the name Louis has significant sentimental value for the royal family. As well as being one of Prince William’s many middle names, the name most likely relates to Louis Mountbatten, the uncle of Prince Philip and last viceroy of India, who was killed by the IRA in a bomb attack aboard his yacht.

Prince William has two weeks of paternity leave before he is due back to his Anglesey base as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot. Kate Middleton is expected to stay at her parents in Berkeley like many a new mother and who knows, maybe one day the new royal Prince will be sleeping in our very own luxury King’s Bed!
