So, it appears to be that time again where we choose another breed of chicken and crown it ‘chicken of the month!’

This month sees the Kulang Asil chicken take the crown. This chicken originated from the South Punjab/Sindh area of Pakistan and India. Popularity of the breed has increased in the western world in recent times with the breed being standardised in Britain. Asils were first considered useful for cock fighting and were often used as fighting cocks. The chicks often fight when they are a few weeks old, and the hens are often aggressive towards each other, with the roosters fighting till the death. In comparison, Asils are very tame towards human, they are quite trusting and have good bonds with their keepers.

The Kulang Asil is one of many varieties of Asil chicken, it stands at 75 cm tall and weighs in around 5-7 kg. The large Kulang Asil are divided into sub varieties: North Indian, South Indian and Madras type. The North and South Indian varieties don’t really differ too much, only the type of comb, shape of the beak and body shape appear to be different. They are mainly light and dark red/ black but on rare occasions can also be white, spangled and pile, they are now mainly used for exhibition for their beautiful hard feathers.

So i’m sure we can all agree that they are extremely impressive, and can surely appreciate why they are a firm favourite with chicken fanciers the world over. We here at Get Laid Beds certainly favour this chicken and that is why the Kulang Asil chicken is our ‘chicken of the month’ for October.
