This is the latest blog to feature one of our new woods in the Hardwood Beds Category. This blog features Cherry – one of the more interesting woods in our range.

For years the Cherry tree has been used for a variety of things because of its many desirable properties.

The primary use is obviously the fruit – cherries have been actively cultivated as far back as 800BC and since then the world demands has only ever increased.

Interestingly it is often used for smoking meats because of its distinct and pleasant odour and flavour.

Gum found in its bark is aromatic and be chewed as a substitute for chewing gum because of its unique and tasteful aroma.

Benfits of using cherry wood to make furniture

Cherry wood is a popular choice for making furniture because it is strong, durable, and has a warm, rich color that gives furniture a classic and elegant look. Some of the specific characteristics of cherry wood that make it a good choice for furniture making include:

  1. Hardness: Cherry wood is a hardwood, which means it is strong and durable. It has a Janka hardness rating of around 950, which is higher than many other popular furniture woods such as pine and oak.

  2. Workability: Cherry wood is relatively easy to work with, making it a favorite of furniture makers. It can be cut, carved, and sanded easily, and it holds paint and stain well.

  3. Colour: The heartwood of cherry wood is a warm reddish-brown color that deepens over time, giving furniture made from cherry wood a classic and timeless look. It also has a fine, straight grain that gives it a smooth, even appearance.

  4. Stability: Cherry wood is known for its stability, which means it resists warping and shrinking over time. This makes it a good choice for furniture that needs to hold its shape and structure over many years.

Overall, cherry wood is a versatile and attractive choice for making furniture, and it is often used to create everything from chairs and tables to cabinets and dressers.

The use we are more interested in, is the fine timber it produces. Cherry wood is a brown hardwood that has a hint of dark red or pink to it. It darkens with age and therefore depending on how old the cut of timber is it can be used for different things, either for warmer, modern bits of furniture or darker more classical furniture.
