Which Bed is Best: Super King vs Two Singles

The eternal struggle of two blanket stealers cohabiting a bed: how do you find a balance that allows you both the same bed space?

The obvious answer is to opt for a larger duvet, if you’re sharing with a fellow comfort-hoarder, but where do you stand on the bed frame itself? Here, we’ll have a look at the pros and cons of a super king bed frame vs. two single beds together.

Size

Do Two Single Beds Make a Queen, King or Super King?

At first thought, it’s common to assume that a super king is going to be significantly larger than two singles, and combined they may measure nearer a UK king or US queen’s dimensions. However, that’s not the case at all. A standard super king size bed measures an impressive 180cm by 200cm, giving you and your sleeping partner plenty of room to each have ample space to sleep.

What Size Are Two Single Beds Together?

Perhaps surprisingly, two single beds measure in at not much smaller than a super king. When pushed together, two single beds will be approximately 180cm by 190cm; only 10cm shorter than a super king, and the same width.

The Benefits of Each

Pros of a Super King

As mentioned above, a super king is slightly longer than a single bed, meaning that they’re better suited to taller people. They’re longer by 10cm, or approximately 4”, which can be quite a big difference for some sleepers.

It’s also worth considering what style of bed you’d like to have. For example, if you’re considering an ottoman style bed, it might make more sense to choose one super king bed over two single beds for a more convenient mechanism and the ability to store larger items.

A third perk to a super king is that you’ll usually find it’s cheaper than purchasing two singles. Although it’s significantly larger than one single bed, the overall materials and time used for making a super king ultimately comes to less than making two singles.

Pros of Two Single Beds Together

It might be sounding like a super king is the no-brainer at this point, but having two single beds instead has a different list of benefits.

The main perk of opting for two single beds is, of course, that they can be separated. If you’re purchasing bedframes for a guest room, for example, it could be hugely beneficial to have two beds that you can push together or separate depending on who your guests are.

Alternatively, if this is a permanent arrangement for you and your sleeping partner, you might find that having two single beds makes it easier for you to have different mattresses and there is no fear of blanket theft. You can each create your ideal bed setup without affecting the other.

Being separate bed frames, you’ll also find that two singles are far easier to manoeuvre when first bringing them into your home than a super king. They’re also incredibly easy to combine once you’ve got them in; simply attach them with a twin bed connector or link bar and you’re ready to go.

We have everything from a small single at a space efficient 2’ 6” all the way up to the massive super Caesar at an impressive 9’ 0”.

If you experience a lot of back and neck pain, a firmer mattress such as our pocket 7000 might be what you need. However, your sleeping partner may be more partial to a softer sleep experience, benefiting instead from one of our latex foam mattresses.

By opting for two single beds, you can have the option to mix and match any two of our single mattresses to make the perfect super king size bed for you and your partner.
