The Will It Fit Guide: How to Get Your New Bed Into Any Space

By George 31 January 2026

When you’re upgrading your bedroom, one worry pops up more than any other: “How am I going to get this bed or mattress into my home?” Narrow hallways, tight staircases, sharp corners — it’s a familiar challenge. At Get Laid Beds, we’ve helped thousands of customers fit beautiful new furniture into all kinds of homes, and this guide shows just how simple it really is.

How to Prepare: Measuring, Planning & Moving Flat-Packed Beds

One of the biggest advantages of a Get Laid Beds frame is that it arrives flat-packed in slim, manageable pieces — no large headboards or awkward one-piece frames to haul upstairs. But a bit of planning goes a long way.

1. Measure Your Tightest Point

Check the narrowest parts of your home. These usually are:

  • Door frames

  • Staircase width

  • Turning angles

  • Landings

  • Loft hatches

  • Hallways with radiators or bannisters

2. Identify the Longest Component

On most of our frames, the side rails are the longest parts you’ll need to manoeuvre. If you already have something of a similar length at home — such as a long box or a rolled rug — try carrying it through your tightest spaces to check the fit.

Don’t have anything that long? A simple workaround is to use a bedsheet. A standard UK sheet for each size is very close in length to our side rails.

  • Hold the sheet lengthways

  • Keep it taut between two people

  • Walk it through your staircase, hallway or doorways

This gives you a reliable sense of how much space you’ll need and whether angling or pivoting will help. It's a quick, easy way to “test” the fit before your delivery arrives.

3. Walk Your Route and Clear Obstacles

Before delivery, walk the path from your entrance to your bedroom:

  • Move furniture, shoe racks or bins

  • Fully open doors and remove doorstops if needed

  • Clear clutter on the stairs

  • Make sure the final room has space for assembly

4. Take It One Piece at a Time

Flat-pack means nothing is too heavy or bulky. Move components individually to make the process much easier — and if a box feels a bit too heavy, simply open it and carry the parts up one by one instead.

Practical Tips for Getting Beds & Mattresses Through Tight Spaces

Even with planning, some homes simply don’t make it easy. Here are tried-and-tested techniques — including what many customers end up doing:

1. Use Alternative Routes

Sometimes the most direct route isn’t the best one.

If your staircase is awkward, consider:

  • Going through an upstairs bathroom (doors often line up better, and make it easier to clear the staircase)

  • Use other rooms, like a spare bedroom, to manoeuvre and align the bed components, giving you a better angle to get them into the bedroom where they need to go.”

  • Using the back door if it offers a better angle

  • Temporarily removing a door from its hinges for extra clearance

Many people are surprised at how a slight detour solves the tightest of spaces.

2. Tilt, Pivot and Angle The Bed Components

Slim pieces like side rails move best when you:

  • Stand them upright

  • Angle them diagonally through doorways

  • Pivot at corners rather than attempting a straight-through carry

Small adjustments make a huge difference.

3. Don’t Attempt It Alone

Even though our flat-packed parts are lightweight, two people make the job far safer and smoother:

  • One person guides; the other carries

  • It’s easier to angle and pivot long pieces

  • You’ll avoid damaging walls, bannisters or the components

  • Less risk of injury or dropping anything

If help isn’t available, consider our assembly service — we’ll take care of the lifting and manoeuvring for you, and get your bed fully set up and ready to rest in.
