Hardwood

Crafted without Compromise

Behind every Heritage bed is a team of skilled craftspeople who see it through from the first drawing to the moment it leaves our workshop. Each piece of hardwood is shaped, joined and finished by hand, before undergoing a final quality inspection and being carefully boxed for its journey to you. It is a slower, more meticulous way of making furniture, and one we believe creates something far more special.

About Heritage Bed Frames

Hardwood Bed Options

  • Oak Beds – Develops a rich patina over time and suits both modern and traditional homes. We source the finest oak from the USA and Canada for our bed frames, where slower growth produces more stable timber with lighter, consistent tones when compared to European oak.

  • Walnut Beds – Deep chocolate tones add natural warmth and help ground a space. Perfect for minimalist bedrooms where the wood can be the focal point.

  • Beech Beds – Pale in colour with a tight, uniform grain, beech is a natural fit for Scandi-inspired interiors. It’s also durable and resistant to knocks, making it a practical choice for busy homes.

  • Ash Beds – A high strength-to-weight ratio and natural elasticity mean less creaking, even in rooms with substantial temperature fluctuations like loft conversions. Its light tone and striking grain suit clean, contemporary bedrooms.

  • Sapele Beds – A sustainable alternative to mahogany, sapele offers rich reddish-brown tones and it is the hardest timber we work with. It stands up well to daily life and works best in well-lit rooms where its depth of colour can shine.

  • Maple Beds – Creamy tones and a silky grain make maple perfect for light, modern homes. Reliably robust, it's built for busy households without sacrificing that airy, refined feel.

  • Cherry Beds – Cherry deepens beautifully over time, developing a warm, natural glow. It pairs well with classic interiors, biophilic designs, and rooms filled with natural light.

Why We Love Our Heritage Edition Beds

  • A finish that improves with age – Quality hardwood develops character over time, deepening in tone and gaining a patina that makes each bed uniquely yours.

  • Built from solid hardwood throughout – No veneers or hollow sections, just 100% solid timber that delivers real weight, stability and long-term durability.

  • Mortise and tenon joinery – Traditional joints lock together without relying on screws, brackets, or glue alone. This creates a frame that tightens over time rather than loosening, keeping your bed solid and silent for decades.

  • Thoughtful designs - Each bed frame celebrates the hardwood, allowing the unrepeatable grain and its organic beauty to take centre stage.

  • Natural strength and stability – Solid hardwood doesn't warp, twist, or sag like engineered alternatives. The density of the timber provides a heavy, grounded base that stays square and sturdy through years of use.

  •  Built to last - Naturally dense and from slow growing trees, our 100% solid hardwood bed frames are built to last a century in busy family homes.

  • A quieter night’s sleep – The density of solid hardwood reduces flex and movement, helping prevent the squeaks and creaks common in lighter frames.

FAQs

Where do we source our hardwood timber from?

We pride ourselves on tracing every tree we use, from managed forests to our workshop. This ensures our timber is sustainably harvested and that no workers are exploited within our supply chain. We source our solid timber from the following regions:

  • USA and Canada - Oak, walnut, ash, maple, and cherry.

  • Croatia and Germany - Beech

  • West Africa (primarily Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Ghana) - Sapele

What's the difference between solid hardwood, softwood, and veneer?

Solid hardwood is cut from a single piece of timber, maintaining its strength, durability, and natural appearance throughout the full depth of the wood.

Solid softwoods, such as pine, are constructed in a similar way. However, because these trees grow more quickly, they tend to have a more open grain structure.

Veneer (often referred to as engineered wood) consists of a thin layer of real wood bonded to a core of composite materials like MDF or chipboard. While this can replicate the look of solid timber, the underlying materials are generally less robust and may be more prone to chipping, peeling, or delamination over time.

How long will a hardwood bed frame last?

With proper care, a solid hardwood bed frame can last between 60 and 100 years. Our mortise and tenon joinery is designed to tighten over time, and the timber itself becomes more stable as it ages.

Are hardwood beds heavier than other bed frames?

Yes, and that's a good thing. The weight of solid hardwood contributes to the frame's stability and eliminates the flex that causes creaking. You'll need two people to move it into position, but once it's in place, it stays put and stays silent.

What mattress types work with a hardwood bed base?

Our hardwood bed bases are designed to support all mattress types, including pocket sprung, memory foam and hybrid designs. Slatted bases provide breathable, even support without the need for a divan.
