The Home Measuring Guide

By George 9 February 2026

There are few things more frustrating than ordering a new bed, only to realise it won’t fit through the front door, up the stairs, or properly into the room itself. Tight hallways, awkward staircases and compact bedrooms are a reality in many homes — especially terraces, flats and period properties.

At Get Laid Beds, we design and sell beds with real homes in mind. That’s why all of our wooden bed frames are delivered flat-packed, making them far easier to manoeuvre through doors, hallways and staircases than bulky, fully assembled frames. Paired with modern rolled mattresses and clever space-saving designs, a little measuring upfront can save you time, stress and unexpected surprises.

This home measuring guide will walk you through exactly what to check before ordering, so your new bed arrives and fits smoothly, first time.

Measuring Your Home: The Key Areas to Check

Before choosing your bed frame or mattress, it’s important to measure the full delivery route — not just the bedroom. Focus on these four key areas:

1. Doorways

Doorways are often the narrowest point in the journey.

How to measure:

  • Measure the clear opening width of the doorway (frame to frame), not just the door itself.

  • Measure the height from the floor to the top of the door frame.

  • If the door opens inward, check whether it can be removed temporarily to create more space.

  • Note any obstacles such as radiators, light switches or handrails nearby.

Flat-packed bed frame components are designed to pass through standard UK doorways with ease, making this much less of a concern than with rigid frames.

2. Hallways

Hallways can restrict turning space, especially in older homes.

How to measure:

  • Measure the width of the hallway at its narrowest point.

  • Measure the length, particularly if there are sharp corners.

  • Check ceiling height if your hallway includes lighting fixtures that hang low.

Because Get Laid Beds frames arrive in individual parts rather than large solid sections, they’re far easier to carry and rotate through tight spaces.

3. Staircases

Stairs are where most delivery issues occur.

How to measure:

  • Measure the width of the staircase between walls or bannisters.

  • Measure the height of the staircase from step to ceiling.

  • Check the landing space at the top and bottom of the stairs.

  • If the staircase turns, measure the tightest corner where items need to pivot.

Flat-packed components dramatically reduce the risk here, as parts can be carried individually rather than lifted in one awkward piece.

4. Bedroom Size

Once the bed reaches the room, it still needs to fit comfortably.

How to measure:

  • Measure the full length and width of the room.

  • Allow space for doors, wardrobes, drawers and walking clearance.

  • Consider ceiling height if choosing a taller frame or adding accessories.

For smaller rooms, low bed frames and space-saving bed frames can make a big difference to how open and usable the space feels.

Bed and Mattress Options That Make Life Easier

Choosing the right products can make delivery, assembly and everyday living much simpler.

Rolled Mattresses

Rolled mattresses are compressed and boxed, making them far easier to:

  • Carry through doorways and up stairs

  • Manoeuvre in tight hallways

  • Position in smaller bedrooms

Once unrolled, they expand to their full size and are ready to use after a short settling period.

Flat-Packed Bed Frames & Professional Assembly

All Get Laid Beds frames are delivered flat-packed for a reason.

This approach:

  • Reduces delivery issues

  • Makes access easier in flats and terraces

  • Allows assembly directly in the room where the bed will live

Get Laid Beds frames are designed to be straightforward to assemble, with clearly labelled components and step-by-step instructions. Everything fits together logically, with no specialist tools required.

For ultimate peace of mind, we also offer:

  • Room of Choice delivery, so your bed arrives exactly where you want it

  • Assembly service, removing the need to lift, build or stress

This is especially useful in homes with narrow staircases, limited time, or where you simply want everything done for you.

Measure Once, Relax Later

Taking the time to measure your home properly ensures peace of mind and avoids unwanted surprises on delivery day. With rolled mattresses, flat-packed frames, low and space-saving designs — plus optional room of choice delivery and assembly — Get Laid Beds makes it easy to get a bed that fits your home as well as your lifestyle.

Measure smart, choose wisely, and enjoy a smooth, stress-free upgrade.
